Advantages and Disadvantages of Indian Orchard Site Compared to Other Prison Sites
The Wayne County Prison Board is engaged in a project to upgrade and expand its correctional facilities to meet current standards and address future demand. The existing Wayne County Prison was constructed in 1935, is out-of-date and fails to provide adequate capacity to accommodate Wayne County's average prison population. This requires the County to house prisoners in other out-of-County facilities at considerable cost and and inconvenience for court proceedings. A new facility of greater capacity would, therefore, not only bring operations up to standard, but also potentially reduce costs of incarceration.

Evaluating the options, including non-structural alternatives, and making a final decision will require a great deal of work. Some of that work has already been done and more studies are underway, but much remains to be done before the Prison Board arrives at a final decision. This website is intended to provide the public with as much background material as possible so that citizens might be fully informed in offering their own views on this important matter. It will be continually updated as new data becomes available.
